Is Bermuda right for your yard?

Bermuda is a warm-season grass. In general it:

  • Needs full sun for most of the day. Under big trees or on the north side of a house it thins out; look at Zoysia or Fescue for those spots.
  • Grows fast in summer, so it fills in and repairs itself quickly, and it needs regular mowing.
  • Goes dormant and tan in winter and greens back up in spring.
  • Spreads by runners, so keep edges trimmed along beds and sidewalks.

Bermuda in winter: dormant sod

After the first hard frost, usually in late fall, Bermuda goes dormant: it turns tan and stops growing, but the grass is still alive. It greens back up in spring once the soil warms.

  • Dormant isn’t dead: the roots and runners are alive and waiting for warm weather.
  • Installing in winter: sod can go down dormant as long as the ground isn’t frozen. It stays tan until spring, then roots in and greens up.
  • Watering: dormant sod needs far less water than summer sod. Keep it from drying out, but don’t keep it soggy.

Yes, we sell and install dormant Bermuda in winter. It’s a good time to get a new lawn in place before spring, so it’s ready to green up when the weather warms.

When to install Bermuda sod in Oklahoma

We install Bermuda year-round: green sod through the growing season, and dormant sod in winter whenever the ground isn’t frozen. It roots fastest when the soil is warm, from late spring through summer. See our sod care guide for watering after install.

How much Bermuda do I need?

One pallet of Bermuda covers 500 square feet. Add 5% for trimming and round up to the next half pallet: a 2,500 sq ft yard takes 5.5 pallets. Use the sod calculator to add up odd-shaped areas, or the price calculator to see your total.
