Which Sod Is Right for Your Oklahoma Yard?
Most Oklahoma lawns come down to three choices: Bermuda, Zoysia, or Fescue. The biggest question is how much sun your yard gets. After that, it’s how much mowing, watering, and wear you expect.
The short answer
- Full sun, kids, dogs, heavy use: Bermuda. Choose TifTuf if you want a finer look and lower water use.
- Sun to light shade, less mowing, a carpet-like look: Zoysia.
- Real shade from big trees, green in spring and fall: Fescue.
Not sure how much sun you get? Look at the yard at 10am, 1pm, and 4pm. If it’s in direct sun for most of those checks, it’s a full-sun yard.

Bermuda: the Oklahoma workhorse
Bermuda loves heat and sun. It spreads by runners, so it fills in worn spots on its own, which is why it’s on so many Oklahoma yards, ball fields, and parks. The trade-off is that it needs sun for most of the day and regular mowing in summer.
- Astro Bermuda is the hardy, economical choice for big sunny yards.
- TifTuf Bermuda is finer, softer, and needs less water. It’s our premium Bermuda.
Zoysia: dense and low-mow
Zoysia grows into a thick lawn that feels like carpet. It grows slowly, so you mow less, and it handles some shade better than Bermuda. Because it grows slowly, it also takes longer to fill in worn spots, so it’s better for front lawns than for a dog run.
Zoysia pallets cover 400 sq ft instead of 500, so you’ll need a few more pallets for the same yard.
Fescue: for shady yards
If mature trees keep your yard shaded, warm-season grasses will thin out. Black Beauty Fescue is a cool-season grass that handles partial shade and stays green in spring and fall. It needs more water in July and August, and since it grows in clumps, bare spots won’t fill in on their own.
