Is Astro Bermuda right for your yard?

Astro is a good fit if you:

  • Have a yard in full sun for most of the day. Under big trees or on the north side of a house, Bermuda thins out; look at Zoysia or Fescue for those spots.
  • Need a lawn that takes a beating. It spreads by runners, so it fills in worn spots from kids and dogs on its own.
  • Are covering a big sunny area and want the best price per pallet.

It grows fast in summer, so it needs regular mowing, and you’ll want to keep edges trimmed along beds and sidewalks.

Astro or TifTuf?

Both are Bermuda, and both want full sun. TifTuf Bermuda costs more per pallet, but it has a finer, softer blade and is bred to use less water. Pick Astro for value and toughness, or TifTuf for a finer look and lower water use. Still comparing? See Bermuda vs Zoysia vs Fescue.

Astro in winter: dormant sod

After the first hard frost, Bermuda goes dormant: it turns tan and stops growing, but it’s still alive. It greens back up in spring once the soil warms.

Yes, we sell and install dormant Bermuda in winter, as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Read more about dormant Bermuda.

How much Astro do I need?

One pallet covers 500 square feet. Round up to the next half pallet: a 2,500 sq ft yard takes 5 pallets. Use the sod calculator for odd shapes, or see your total in the price calculator.
